Families with Children from China

Purpose

The Milwaukee-Area Families with Children from China (MA-FCC) is a nonprofit organization of families who have adopted, or who are planning to adopt children from China. Our chapter of the national nonprofit group, Families with Children from China, was established in 1995. The mission of MA-FCC is to provide a support network with social, educational, and cultural activities which promote understanding and appreciation of Chinese heritage.

Networking

We offer access to a network of families who have already adopted from China, and who can provide support and information to those who are at any stage in the process

Socials

Multiple events are organized annually for member families. Socials are typically held on Sunday afternoons at various locations in the Milwaukee area. At each event there are activities for the children, snacks, adults have a chance to socialize, share experiences, and exchange China adoption-related news. Our largest event is the annual Chinese New Year celebration. In addition to festival related activities and crafts attendees enjoy a Chinese buffet dinner, shopping for ethnic related items, silent auction for our charitable initiatives and an amazing Lion Dance performance.

The 7+Up Club is for all kids age 7 and older. Special events designed especially for older kids are held periodically throughout the year.

Lending Library

Our lending library is an ever growing collection of China-related and adoption-related books and tapes. These books and tapes are made available for members monthly at Cricket Academy and other MA-FCC events. There is something for every age including picture books and the videotape “Big Bird in China” for young children to novels, history and cookbooks for adults.

Electronic Mail

We maintain a private, electronic mailing list through Yahoo Groups. This e-mail list provides member families the opportunity to stay in touch via email, to ask questions, distribute announcements, and discuss topics of shared interest.

Newsletter

A periodic newsletter is sent out to MA-FCC member families. This newsletter informs our families on the activities of our local group, and includes articles of interest for those who have adopted from China, or who are planning to. Click the link to view our latest newsletter in PDF format:

Cricket Academy

Cricket Academy is a non-profit educational organization teaching Mandarin Chinese language and Chinese culture to English speaking families. Classes are offered on Saturday mornings. Cricket was started in the fall of 2000 by a group of MA-FCC families. Cricket is operated independently from MA-FCC. Please click on the link above to go to Cricket Academy’s web site.

Volunteer Opportunities

There are numerous opportunities to share your talents and energy. Charitable volunteers investigate ways MA-FCC can contribute to the welfare of the children who are still in Chinese orphanages, waiting for permanent homes. Other volunteers help establish relationships with other FCC groups and the local Chinese community. We hope to participate in more joint activities and learn from the members of these other groups. With volunteer help, we also hope to continue to offer activities for our families, such as China-related field trips, book discussion groups, Tai Chi and cooking classes, and other offerings that may interest our members. Please consider volunteering and helping us offer our members all of these great opportunities.
